LEARN TO FORAGE

Foraging is a hugely pleasurable and rewarding pastime for all ages and is free and accessible to anyone – most people have picked and eaten brambles before they even start school! My list of tips for beginners should help you to tune into some more interesting species, but eventually, all but the most dogged need a bit of a helping hand. The lurking fear of misidentifying something and being poisoned holds back a lot of people, and to have your tentative identification confirmed by an expert – and see it cooked and eaten before your eyes – can give the confidence to pick and eat delicious free food for a lifetime.

In addition to the information on this site, Galloway Wild Foods offers 3 types of expert led foraging:

FORAGING WALKS comprising:

  • A gentle 2.5 to 3 hour ramble (usually covering no more than 1 mile), giving you a feel for what foraging is all about and finding and learning to ID some interesting plants/fungi/seaweed/shellfish (depending on the theme/location/time of year). Great if you are wondering if foraging is for you, or just as a fun thing to do. These walks include loads of tasty foraged treats  to demonstrate what can be done with our finds, and usually a cook-in of what we find. e.g.. Flambeed mushrooms, wild sushi, a foraged cocktail etc.
  • See foraging events calendar for dates and information on etc.
  • Email mark@gallowaywildfoods.com to reserve a place.

  • A gourmet tasting menu of foraged ingredients, home made bread, sloe gin, yarrow tea, Galloway cheeses etc, on the Riverside Terrace at the Mill on the Fleet, Gatehouse of Fleet.
  • Places are limited to 12 people per foray.
